Purposeful Meetings – Driving Deeper Meaning and Insights

Janet Sperstad, CMP, Program Director, Madison College

Biog: Janet currently leads Madison College’s Meeting and Event Management Associate degree program, which she founded in 2002 and has recently been selected as Competency Model Champion by the U.S. Department of Labor. Janet has been named one of Successful Meeting’s 25 Most Influential People in the Meetings Industry as well as a Changemaker by MeetingsNet in 2016.  She is also the recipient of the 2015 Meeting Professionals International Chairman’s Award.

Session Description:  The IMEX America Talking Point: Purposeful Meetings, explores how to plan with deeper meaning, innovation, and insight in mind.  This means shifting away from focusing on the perfect execution of logistics and moving towards creating memorable moments that engage, inspire, and create long lasting positive outcomes for meeting professionals today.  Using findings from industry research including a new white paper (in partnership with PSAV and IMEX Group), Janet will explore the five areas that define Purposeful Meetings: behavior science, meeting design, technology, health and wellbeing, and leaving a positive legacy.

Biog: Juliet Funt is the CEO of WhiteSpace at Work, a training and consulting firm that helps organizations, their leaders and employees flip the norms of business in order to reclaim their creativity, productivity and engagement. Juliet is a force for change in organizations around the world, helping them find their WhiteSpace, recharge their people and reclaim their passion for work.

Session Description:  When talented workers are lost in unnecessary emails, meetings, reporting and other low-value tasks, they crawl toward their pivotal objectives. Distraction, interruption and unnecessary complexity further muddle their creative spark. And they have no time to think!

Imagine instead a workplace where the majority of time is spent on tasks of true importance. Where thoughtful time is a priority and where norms and habits protect employees from touching work that drains them.

Prosperity Ahead – or Not?

Biog: One of the top economists in the country, Todd Buchholz “lights up economics with a wickedly sparkling wit,” says the Associated Press.  Todd is a former White House senior economic advisor, Tiger hedge fund managing director and best-selling author. His lively and informative speaking engagements have earned him a place in Successful Meetings Magazine’s “21 Top Speakers for the 21st Century”, and his best-selling books on economics and financial markets have been widely translated and are taught in universities worldwide. 

Session description: As President Trump tries to negotiate with Republicans and with Democrats, meeting planners must grapple with crucial questions:  

  1. Will the economy continue to grow and will corporate earnings improve, providing the impetus for more corporate meeting activity?  
  2. Can the Federal Reserve Board prod the economy to recover, while nudging interest rates higher? 
  3. Will the president’s “get-tough” attitude with China, Mexico, and Canada impede international commerce and travel?
  4. Will energy prices stay in a comfortable zone or will OPEC re-establish its market power and drive prices higher?

Creating Innovative Experience through Interactive Experiences and Immersive Entertainment

Biog: Brent Bushnell is the CEO of Two Bit Circus, a Los Angeles-based experiential entertainment company building a network of permanent micro-amusement parks. Most recently the team launched STEAM Carnival, a traveling showcase of high-tech entertainment and workshops to inspire invention. The company regularly serves as immersive entertainment consultant for brands with clients including NFL, Dave & Busters, NBA, Indy, Olympics, and more. Previously, Brent was the on-camera inventor for the ABC TV show “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition”. He's a big nerd and loves inspiring other kids to grow up to be nerds.  

Session description: Brent Bushnell is a master of interactive experiences and immersive entertainment.  He has an insatiable appetite for novel entertainment and much to share about immersive experiences. To Brent, live events offer the rare opportunity to fully surround a guest with an experience. Unlike videos, books, websites or apps, events touch all of the senses leading to impressions with the potential for real life change. But sadly, many events have gone stale, failing to innovate.

There is, however, a new breed of events supported by technology and innovative thinking, and that their novel approach is unlocking a new wave of experiences just in time for a shift in consumer appetites towards interactive and hands-on.  In this session we’ll survey some of the latest approaches, what's working and what needs work.  Brent will inspire innovation, creativity, and a whole new reality!
