What's New at IMEX America

imex americaVegas here we come! … Purposeful Meetings lead the charge

In just three short months the US and global meetings industry will once again come together to share passion, innovation, business opportunities and knowledge in Las Vegas at IMEX America 2017 (IA 2017).

The seventh installment of the leading show - featuring free entry and free education - will take place at the Sands® Expo and The Venetian®/The Palazzo® October 10th-12th with events and learning kicking off the day before the show on Smart Monday powered by MPI, October 9th.

Everything that has been added or expanded at the show is about delivering the highest quality experience for hosted buyers, buyer attendees, industry thought leaders, exhibitors and more.

In line with this goal, the 2017 IMEX Talking Point is Purposeful Meetings -- how to plan with deeper meaning, innovation and insight in mind. Under the Purposeful Meetings umbrella the  IMEX America 2017 education program will feature sessions on event design, behavioral science, health and wellbeing, technology and leaving a positive legacy –all with an eye to upping attendee engagement, inspiration, enjoyment and lasting value.

New highlights to be on the watch for at this year’s IMEX America include:

Growing Business Power

1. Expanding Exhibitors

Once again, the IMEX show floor will bring even more variety and chances to connect and do business. As of mid-July 36 exhibitors are expanding their booths, 22 new booths join the line-up, and 10 organizations that exhibited as booth partners previously will strike out on their own.

Geographically, exhibitor growth is seen across all regions of the US, and from Canada, South America, the Middle East, the UK, Europe and more.

Market segment wise, there will be more choices than ever for buyers across all facets of the industry -- from DMCs, incentives, and destinations … to hotels, event design companies and technology.

A few examples include …

Bigger Booths: The Bahamas, Hungary, Ireland, Accor, IHG, Sonesta Collection, Marriott International, Evenium, Tommy Bahama, 3D Cruise Partners, Allied PRA, Multiple California exhibitors (Long Beach, Anaheim, LA, Monterey County & Santa Barbara), Nashville and Memphis, the Czech Tourist Authority, Visit England and more.

Brand New Booths: Memorable Costa Rica, Boston Convention Marketing Center, COMO Hotels - New York, Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority, Global Incentive Management DMC, Viking Cruises, Live Nation Special Events, Hotel Xcaret Mexico.   In the Tech Pavilion EventsCase and CadmiumCD will also show for the first time.

Former Stand Partners Going ‘Standalone’: Austin Convention & Visitors Bureau, Massachusetts Convention Center Authority, Planet Hollywood, Velas Resorts, Ceará's Official Tourism Authority, the Mob Museum and others.

This year IMEX America welcomes 10 new hosted buyer groups including: Best Cities, Double Dutch, Event Mobi, Westjet, ROOTS MICE – USA/Canada, Event Experiences by Incentive Concepts, Incenta Rewards, Hosts Global, Site South America & Kenes.

More Innovative & Inspiring Education

Always upping the ante on education – 180+ sessions expected-- new highlights in 2017 include:

3. Smart Monday – powered by MPI

Smart Monday will feature a keynote by Janet Sperstad, CMP, Program Director, Madison College on “Purposeful Meetings – Driving Deeper Meaning and Insights”. Here she’ll speak to shifting away from a focus on perfect logistical execution alone to a move towards creating memorable moments that engage, inspire, and create long lasting positive outcomes as well.

Daily Show Keynotes to be announced by MPI soon. Stay tuned!

Also new for Smart Monday is an Event Design Certificate (EDC) Programme Level 1 of Mastery taught by the Event Design Collective. It will take place 10:00 am – 4:30 pm on Smart Monday and Tuesday from 9:00 am -10:00 am.

Further, the new Association Leadership Forum, plus two ICCA-led sessions for associations take the place of Association Focus. The Forum is aimed at the most senior association executives while the ICCA sessions are open to all. This brand-new format enables association event planners to attend a mix of general Smart Monday sessions plus association specific sessions.  The popular Association Evening will still make Monday night a high-impact start to the week, getting people together to mix and mingle.

A new addition to the networking roster this year is the Shamrock Shootout Golf tournament – also on Smart Monday.

Greener & More CSR-Focused than Ever

Rolling out the ‘green carpet’, all aisle carpet will be 100% recycled for the first time and will be recycled yet again after the show.

Larger, paper-only badges mean no need for plastic covers, while IMEX’s decision to no longer print a show catalog will save approx. 20 tons of paper.

Last but not least the #greencaffeine initiative will ask each person coming to the show to bring their favorite travel mug from home for coffee refills at certain Sands Expo coffee outlets.

IMEX’s commitment to CSR is ever-strong and sees the launch of a new concept everyone can take part in. “Spread the Word Nevada”, a children’s literacy non-profit, becomes a new IMEX CSR partner this year. All attendees are being asked to bring one book to the IMEX Sustainability and CSR Showcase booth.  Donations will be given to longtime IMEX America CSR community partner, the Shade Tree Shelter. Both adult and children’s books are welcomed.

All of these efforts will add to the already robust Sustainability and CSR programs and best practices at the show that include waste recycling and diversion, energy use sensitivity, Clean the World® hygiene kit making, Waterwise Wednesday catering offerings, the Badgeback program and exhibitor donations to avoid dumpster “dumping” post show.
