Prague Wins the Prestigious Top Meeting Destination Award Again

Representatives of the Prague Convention Bureau received the 2016 Top Meeting Destination award at the annual Conventa trade fair in Ljubljana, Slovenia on January 18, 2017. The prize is awarded by Slovenian Kongres magazine to the destinations from Central and South East Europe region since 2011, in accordance with the evaluation based on destination’s infrastructure, marketing activities and other indexes. Prague thus follows up on its achievements in previous years: the city occupied the second position in the Meeting Star contest twice, and in 2013 it even won the first prize.

The Kongres magazine expert jury evaluated 68 destinations from 19 countries of the Central and South East Europe region, based on the following criteria: natural and cultural factors, general and transport infrastructure, tourist infrastructure, meetings infrastructure, marketing buzz, ICCA (International Congress and Convention Association) index, quality of life index, global peace index, and subjective grade. The top grade for each assessed section was 5.

The Czech metropole received the overall destination grade of 4.51 from the expert jury. The overall grade is a result of combination of the following individual grades:

  • natural and cultural factors: 4.54
  • general and transport infrastructure: 4.59
  • tourist infrastructure: 4.90
  • meetings infrastructure: 4.65
  • marketing buzz: 4.85
  • ICCA index: 4.12
  • quality of life index: 4.10
  • global peace index: 4.25
  • subjective grade: 4.61

In the top 5 ranked also: Istanbul on the second place with the grade of 4.39; Budapest on the third with 4.37 points, followed by Athens and Ljubljana.

Top International Meeting Planners to Visit Prague for Meeting & Incentive Forum Europe Autumn 2016

Forum supported by Prague CVB to see over 4,000 pre-scheduled one-to-one meetings aimed at increasing business travel to Czech Republic.

Prague is making big moves this year!

More than 350 top international meeting and incentive professionals will gather in Prague, 26-30 September 2016, for M&I Forum Europe Autumn 2016.  In partnership with the Prague Convention Bureau and a number of local DMCs, the four-day event will see fully hosted buyers hold over 4,000 meetings with event suppliers from across Europe and beyond.

The Forum will introduce some of Europe’s leading meeting and incentive professionals to new and undiscovered features of the Czech capital. While it retains a rich culture and history, Prague is also a modern and dynamic city, home to state-of-the-art, multifunctional event spaces, and new hotels.

“Prague hosted an M&I Forum back in 2009 and this is the perfect time for the event to return. Heritage and history remain an inseparable part of the city, but they’re now complemented by stunning modern venues, all with exceptional services. A dynamic city, we’re excited to show Prague in a new light. Our wonderful city is perfectly suited to both big events and smaller incentive groups, and I am sure the experience will open up new business opportunities and give attendees total confidence in the destination.” said Lenka Jarošová, Executive Director of Prague Convention Bureau. “Coming to this Forum is in my opinion a great opportunity to experience up close what we have to offer and, besides doing good business, have a huge amount of fun.”

M&I Forums are trade events held in the world’s leading meetings destinations. They offer business events suppliers the opportunity to meet and develop relationships with vetted, hand-selected buyers who have confirmed budgets to spend. The Forums provide a professional, effective and fun platform for business meetings and networking with these high quality buyers. They also allow top global meetings destinations to showcase their offerings, in order to grow their share of the international business events market. In 2016, Prague will join Dubai (UAE), Scottsdale, AZ (USA), Madrid (Spain), and Izmir (Turkey) in hosting M&I Forums to showcase their offering to a global audience of events professionals.

Commenting on the event in Prague, Richard Barnes, Managing Director of M&I Forums, added: “Prague has invested a vast amount in their meetings infrastructure in recent years, and there’s a new side to the Czech capital that’s waiting to be explored. It’s home to an array of new, groundbreaking hotels and venues which we’re excited to introduce our delegates to, opening their eyes to the opportunities this city has to offer in 2016.”

Since Prague last hosted an M&I Forum in 2009, the city has undergone substantial changes. The accommodation offering, especially 4 and 5* hotels, increased considerably, and the public transportation system has been modernized and widely extended to make the city and its meeting venues easily accessible to visitors. Prague is now home to many international innovative technology and science institutions, attracting experts and scholars from all over the world. In tandem with these infrastructure changes, Prague Convention Bureau has developed its services significantly, including an extensive program of incentive support granted by the city and Ambassador Programme for association events. In short, Prague is completely prepared to meet the demands of the very highest end of the meetings industry.

IMEX America Proves Strength of Meetings Industry

Representatives from CP.com supplier partners had a good showing in the hall. Among them were:

  • Dave Gabri – Associated Luxury Hotels International (ALHI was celebrating 30 years in the industry!)

ALHI celebrated 30 years in the industry at this year’s IMEX America

  • Martina Fundaro – The Prague Convention Bureau
  • Marie McKown – Meet in Ireland (newest member!)
  • Cat Puccino – Visit Santa Barbara
  • Angeline Liu/Alan Pryor/Anette Palm – Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre
  • Patricia Beaudoux – Cotai Strip Macau
  • Julie Dodds – Visit Anchorage
  • Dan O’Neil/Bonnie Carlson – Bloomington CVB

Ray Bloom, Chairman of IMEX, addresses the media at the IMEX America closing press conference

The closing press conference had Ray Bloom, Chairman of IMEX giving us the rundown on this year’s event. For those judging success “by the numbers”, here are a few stats:

  • 10,600 participants including buyers, visitors and exhibitors
  • 66,000 individual and group appointments along with stand presentations took place
  • 51% or more of appointments included a profile or RFP
  • 80 new booths with 56 returning exhibitors increasing their space
  • 412 exhibitors and buyers participated in the IMEX run Las Vegas routed along the famous Strip

However, the biggest success was not measured in numbers but in the upbeat mood of nearly everyone on the show floor as the economy strengthens and companies expand meeting budgets.

In fact, this has generated a big problem for IMEX America going forward.

With so many new exhibitors and expanded booths this year, the trade show has maxed out its hall in the Sands Expo and will not have room for exhibitors to expand until it can move into a larger space in 2018. Not a bad problem for our industry to have!!

As always, all attendees fortunate enough to attend IMEX America were exposed to high levels of business and networking. Along with the record number of appointments and packed-out education events, some of the novel ideas to encourage mingling in the various stands included viewing a live Sumo Demonstration and applauding the winner of this year’s Huggability Award…fortunately not taking place in the same stand!

Along with Wayne Newton and Celine Dion, Las Vegas is getting famous for hosting IMEX America! So new planners, to see what all this fuss is about, sign up to participate as a ConventionPlanit.com Hosted Buyer next year when the show will take place October 18-20, 2016.

IMEX America Day 3

Yesterday was an even busier day than Tuesday for us at IMEX America, believe it or not! Wednesday was full of appointments at the booth with meeting planners, including two with members of our Advisory Council.

In true fashion, they were able to provide some excellent suggestions on features to add to RFP Organization, our RFP response system that displays responses on customized spreadsheets. Stay tuned for those suggestions to be coming soon to the website

For the attendees, the robust education here at IMEX America, provided with a partnership with MPI, was a huge draw. Several of our Hosted Buyers will be sharing their reflections and findings from some of these education sessions in future blog posts.!

While I was busy with our appointments, Maureen was busy with appointments of her own, presentations and press conferences, too!

First up was a press conference for the Prague Convention Bureau. Martina Fundaro spoke to the group about Prague’s new destination branding, which will present a unified visual of the city. The bureau launched a redesigned website earlier this year – be sure to check it out!

She then joined our Hosted Buyers for a group appointment with the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre. They presented our group with beautiful Malaysian sarongs, an indication of true Malaysian hospitality.

After the show closed for the day, we were off to our next reception, which was sponsored by Delta Air Lines. Through Delta’s Meet and Global Meetings programs, meeting planners can receive discounted flights for their groups. We had a great time seeing many of our friends from the Delta Team as well as some of our Hosted Buyers and other CP Members.

To top it off, I won a raffle for a trip to Minneapolis. Thanks Delta!
