ASAE’s 40th Springtime Expo

As everyone in the Association world must know by now, last week’s Springtime was both the 40th anniversary of the iconic event and also its “Swan Song.”

Your intrepid Blogger was there along with ConventionPlanit.com staff members Katherine & David Markham, Mara Hill-Buckner and Taffy Rice to bid farewell to this event, long characterized by its partnering of education and networking for the Washington D.C. region’s planners and suppliers.

It will be replaced next year by a new endeavor called XDP. The Xperience Design Project will be held May 23-24, 2017, at Gaylord National® Resort & Convention Center at National Harbor, Maryland.

Needless to say, this announcement leant a certain amount of poignancy to the occasion but in no way diminished the energy level of business being done on the tradeshow floor. While this format appears to be going the way of the Dodo bird, we are ever hopeful that the replacement Business Exchange component of the new event will continue to serve the B to B and Face-to-Face needs of both planners and suppliers.

Among the member partners of ConventionPlanit.com exhibiting in the hall were Hargrove, Visit Bellevue, Team San Jose, Delta Air Lines, Little Rock CVB, Visit Anchorage, Providence Warwick CVB, Hyatt Regency Chicago and Mohegan Sun Pocono Downs.

Mexico Planners Receive Sneak Peek of ConventionPlanit LATAM

Earlier this month, ConventionPlanit.com was again introduced to Latin American meeting professionals, but this time, in Spanish!

Expo Meetings Exhibition

ConventionPlanit LATAM representatives Eduardo Yarto & Sandra Reed

ConventionPlanit LATAM, the Spanish version of CP.com, was very well received at the Expo Meetings Mexico that was held March 5 -7, 2014 at the Centro Banamex in Mexico City. Over 16,000 sq ft of exhibitors, associations and publications were present at this annual event.

ConventionPlanit LATAM was pleased to host destinations such as Tijuana, Mexico City and Chiapas at their booth. Other destinations present at the show were Manzanillo, Yucatan and Guadalajara among others.

A group of buyers from USA, South America and Europe had a chance to take a tour of vibrant and exciting Mexico City prior to the event. MPI and PCMA each hosted a luncheon with entertaining speakers.

Stay tuned later this month for the official launch of ConventionPlanit LATAM!

ICOMEX 2013 – Breaking into the Latin American Meetings Market

Sandra Reed of Meetings Alliance, served as your intrepid bloggers “wingman” while in Mexico City.

With French as my second language, I was a bit stymied when trying to communicate during the show. Thanks to Sandra and her fluent Spanish, ConventionPlanit.com is making inroads with the Latin American meeting professionals.

We hope to expand on this partnership in the near future.

Sandra and myself at the ConventionPlanit.com Stand

Gregg Talley, President and CEO of Talley Management, found out the hard way that Mexicans love their music.  As he began his speech on “The Importance of Association Management” in a semi-enclosed area without a ceiling or doors, a nearby festival orchestra began playing a very energetic march using ALL the horns available to the musicians.

After several attempts to speak, he was finally forced to surrender until the music ceased. At least by then, everyone was paying attention!

News from IMEX in Las Vegas

News from Las Vegas: You know you are part of a “friendly” industry when ConventionPlanit.com member Eduardo Chaillo, Director of Meetings from the Mexico Tourism Board won the Ovation Global Huggability Award.

Only at IMEX America!

Seen as one of the U.S. cities representing California at this year’s IMEX America is (new) ConventionPlanit.com supplier member, Santa Barbara.

Meetings in Santa Barbara aren’t just meetings, but an experience that enriches the mind, strengthens the body and inspires the soul. That is a lot to ask of a destination but the city spans 100 miles of pristine coastline and features a rich heritage, world-renowned food-and-wine scene, stunning natural beauty and near-perfect weather.

The Santa Barbara Stand at IMEX America

IMEX America Exhibitor Events highlights included everything from Energizer Breakfasts to  the Parade of Chefs to the Maui Jim Mai Tai Hour.

The Malaysia SpiceMarket Cocktail Reception gave ConventionPlanit.com hosted buyers the opportunity to try out their bargaining skills and the Switzerland Incentive and Convention Bureau stand offered planners an opportunity to win a 7 day trip to Switzerland.

Malaysia

Malaysia’s Stand at the show.  Their cocktail reception was so much fun I forgot to take a photo!

This is just the beginning of all of the exciting happenings this week at IMEX America.  More to come!

Exhibitors Get Creative at AIBTM

We’re back again with more inside info from the show floor at AIBTM 2012.  There was so much excitement in the air throughout the show and the Baltimore Convention Center had the air conditioning pumping for us – you would have never known it was over 100 degrees right outside!

I had the chance to walk the show floor and check out the exciting booths.  This year, PCMA offered 15-minute bite-sized educational sessions at their stand.  What an innovative way to educate the attendees!

Many of our CP members were also exhibiting, and boy did they go all out.

AIBTM 2012

Longtime site member Associated Luxury Hotels International had a busy stand all day.  Their portfolio of properties, many of which are international, was the perfect fit for AIBTM.

AIBTM 2012

Doesn’t this look like the perfect place to take a load off and learn all about the exciting city of Los Angeles?

AIBTM 2012

Visit Mexico‘s booth resembled an enormous call center.  They brought representatives from many of the large meeting destinations in the country and had no shortage of staff to share information, handouts, and cds.

Atlantic City CVB

The Atlantic City Convention & Visitors Authority staff was kind enough to pose for a photo for me.  Look at all of those delicious M&Ms!

Malaysia CVB

The Malaysia Convention & Exhibition Bureau‘s booth was located in the international section of the expo hall.  There were quite a few international exhibitors, but the bright and cheerful tropical colors of Malaysia’s booth made them a stand out!

It was also fun catching up with members from Travel Portland, the Bloomington Convention & Visitors Bureau, and Site Solutions Worldwide.  Site Solutions offers housing and registration assistance, in addition to a slew of other meeting and event management services.  Our friend Justina with Site Solutions has a wealth of tips for meeting planners that we’ll be sharing in some upcoming issues of our enewsletter – so stay tuned!

A fun and exciting addition to the show floor was the The Future Events Experience, which offered meeting planners and suppliers a chance to learn about new technology in brief hands-on demonstrations (while relaxing on comfy leather couches!)  There was a wealth of educational sessions on the schedule, but the Future Events Experience was a fun way to interact a bit more personally with the presenters in between visiting booths.

Thank you to AIBTM for such an informative and fun show!  We can’t wait for next year’s show in Chicago – mark your calendars for June 11-13, 2013!
