Dena’ina Center Blends New Technology and Rich Culture

Wanted: a convention center that incorporates 10,000 years of human history, and has Wi-Fi capabilities for up to 4,000 simultaneous users. Anchorage’s Dena’ina Civic and Convention Center successfully combines the rich traditions of Alaska with a modern meeting facility.

Artwork and room names in the Dena’ina Center tell the story of the Dena’ina Athabascan people in the centuries before Anchorage was established. For example, a stained glass mural depicts scenes of traditional life in the region.

The Dena’ina Center may tell a story thousands of years old, but it is also loaded up with enough technology to keep the proceedings firmly in the 21st century. The center’s wireless network can handle thousands of concurrent devices; there’s no searching on the tradeshow floor for a signal, even on a busy day.

The largest convention center in the state, the Dena’ina Center is ideal for national conventions and tradeshows and has all the elements expected in a world-class convention center.

The 2015 GLACIER conference was a prime example of Anchorage’s world-class standing. Foreign ministers joined President Obama for an Arctic issues conference. Anchorage met the demanding security, communications and conferencing needs for world leaders and is ready to serve you.

Explore U.S. National Treasures

anchorage hidden gem

The 100th anniversary of the National Parks Service makes this an exceptional year to explore U.S. national treasures. With tremendous access to the adventures, animals and natural wonders of Alaska’s national parks, Anchorage holds something special.

Anchorage is perched on the edge of incredible glaciers, unrivaled wildlife and seemingly endless wild lands. From the sparkling waters of Kenai Fjords to the tall summit of Denali, the city pairs wild adventures in stunning national parks with metropolitan appeals.

Anchorage is nearest to the state’s iconic parks and offers many ways to enjoy each of them. Whales feed and otters bob in the glacier-filled Kenai Fjords National Park. Denali National Park is home to North America’s tallest peak and amazing wildlife. Take off for bear viewing, hiking or fishing in Lake Clark National Park and Katmai National Park. Mighty Wrangell-Saint Elias has glaciers larger than Rhode Island, and a gold history runs deep.

In all, Alaska has eight national parks, each among the largest in the nation. With so much to explore, Anchorage serves as a key hub for Alaska’s parks. Learn more about what Anchorage offers for conventions and meetings.

While our booth looked great, we were no match for the special Alaskan visitors that decorated the Visit Anchorage booth. (Our friends told us they brought over 200 huskies to the show, and all of them found new homes!)

PCMA’s Convening Leaders Starts January Off Strong

pcma convening leaders

Neither snow falling from above, slush building underfoot or wind catching one in the mid-section prevented over 4,000 participants from gathering  Jan. 11-14 for the 2015 PCMA Convening Leaders meeting in its hometown of Chicago. Your intrepid ConventionPlanit.com Blogger (no stranger to this type of weather) was one of the attendees’ intent on beginning the New Year by joining colleagues for 3 days of education and networking.

PCMA kicked off on Sunday with the Opening Reception held at the prestigious Museum of Science and Industry which was transformed to display Chicago neighborhoods. Food stations showcased yummy tidbits from around the globe while entertainers mingled with the attendees (I nearly became a participant in a Tango demonstration moving around the floor!)

I caught up with CP.com suppliers Julie Dodds from Visit Anchorage, Gerry Kingston from Delta Air Lines and Jane Schuldt with World Marketing Group as well as Advisory Council member David Williams from IEEE attending with his family. His daughter is looking to join the hospitality industry upon graduation…what an intro to our world!

IMEX America Wrap Up

I found a few more photos floating around on my devices that I wanted to share with you all. The third and final day of the show, I had a chance to check out some of CP’s partners amazing booths.

Associated Luxury Hotels International had a very large space at the show, and with 160+ member hotels, it was easy to see why the extra space was needed!

Anchorage Visits Washington, DC

Yesterday, ConventionPlanit.com Co-Founder Katherine Markham, CHME attended a luncheon sponsored by Visit Anchorage in Washington, DC.

Our friends at Anchorage, always the most gracious of hosts, put on a wonderful presentation showcasing all of the exciting activities available to meeting planners who are lucky enough to hold a meeting there.

Visit Anchorage Event

ConventionPlanit.com supplier partner member Visit Anchorage came to the Denver area last week for a luncheon event attended by local meeting planners. Hosted by Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse, participants enjoyed a delicious meal topped only by the excellent service.

Along with finding out why their next meeting should be in Anchorage, the audience was treated to a history lesson by “Professor” Jim Henderson, Vice President, Convention Sales. The city of Anchorage got its start as a tent city in 1915 when the site was selected as the base for the construction of the Alaska Railroad. Slides depicting Athabascan fishing camps, Captain Cook’s discoveries in 1778, Russian winter trading posts, Native cultural groups and gold rush riches illuminated details about Alaska’s largest city.

Marlene Geils, Convention Sales Manager, represented the Convention and Meeting, Sales and Service Team. This group of committed professionals knows the industry, is passionate about Alaska and can help make your next meeting easy, successful and fun.

Watch for the Springtime Grand Prize of a trip to Anchorage including hotel and ground arrangements provided by the CVB and air transportation by Alaska Airlines!

Springtime Expo 2012

Last Thursday, the CP gang headed into DC for the annual ASAE Springtime Expo.  It is a show we look forward to every year – the Education Sessions are informative and there is always an interesting Keynote Speaker, but most of all, we have the chance to say hello to many of our member properties and show meeting planners how easy ConventionPlanit.com is to use!

ConventionPlanit.com Springtime 2012 Booth

ConventionPlanit.com staff in our booth at the Springtime show. There was not a dull moment all day! (From L to R: Ashley Chalmers, Katherine Markham, CHME, David Markham, Illusionist Benjamin Corey, Sandy Lavery, Maureen Pickell.)

This year we had a special treat for our booth visitors – entertainment!  Benjamin Corey, the Meeting Illusionist, wowed meeting planners by making a golden coin disappear and reappear and correctly guessing cards.  He told attendees that  ConventionPlanit.com can make their meeting planning troubles disappear with the new 24 hour RFP response guarantee!

Illusionist Benjamin Feinblum

Meeting Illusionist Benjamin Corey amazes meeting planners with his magic. He has levitation powers - wouldn't that be a fun conference keynote!

We also had a great time announcing the winner of our Grand Prize.  Visit Anchorage and Alaska Airlines helped us to offer an amazing prize – a three-night stay for two at the Hilton Anchorage, including roundtrip airfare.  The trip also includes roundtrip tickets for two on the Anchorage Railroad from Anchorage to Seward, a wildlife and glacier cruise for two courtesy of Kenai Fjords Tours, and tickets to the Anchorage Museum, Alaska Native Heritage Center, and the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center!

Stay tuned for some in depth posts from Springtime’s great education sessions.  Did you attend the show? What was your favorite session?

Booth Congratulations

This comes under the category of “better late than never”… we want to recognize two ConventionPlanit.com supplier members who were winners of the booth contests at ASAE’s Annual Meeting.

The Anchorage CVB came in third and the Memphis CVB won an honorable mention…both for inline booths. Nice to see that the judges appreciated the efforts of Anchorage and Memphis to attract and focus planners on their destinations.

To see how they continue their marketing efforts to meeting professionals after the trade show is over, look up their listings on www.conventionplanit.com!
