Dena’ina Center Blends New Technology and Rich Culture

Wanted: a convention center that incorporates 10,000 years of human history, and has Wi-Fi capabilities for up to 4,000 simultaneous users. Anchorage’s Dena’ina Civic and Convention Center successfully combines the rich traditions of Alaska with a modern meeting facility.

Artwork and room names in the Dena’ina Center tell the story of the Dena’ina Athabascan people in the centuries before Anchorage was established. For example, a stained glass mural depicts scenes of traditional life in the region.

The Dena’ina Center may tell a story thousands of years old, but it is also loaded up with enough technology to keep the proceedings firmly in the 21st century. The center’s wireless network can handle thousands of concurrent devices; there’s no searching on the tradeshow floor for a signal, even on a busy day.

The largest convention center in the state, the Dena’ina Center is ideal for national conventions and tradeshows and has all the elements expected in a world-class convention center.

The 2015 GLACIER conference was a prime example of Anchorage’s world-class standing. Foreign ministers joined President Obama for an Arctic issues conference. Anchorage met the demanding security, communications and conferencing needs for world leaders and is ready to serve you.

Explore U.S. National Treasures

anchorage hidden gem

The 100th anniversary of the National Parks Service makes this an exceptional year to explore U.S. national treasures. With tremendous access to the adventures, animals and natural wonders of Alaska’s national parks, Anchorage holds something special.

Anchorage is perched on the edge of incredible glaciers, unrivaled wildlife and seemingly endless wild lands. From the sparkling waters of Kenai Fjords to the tall summit of Denali, the city pairs wild adventures in stunning national parks with metropolitan appeals.

Anchorage is nearest to the state’s iconic parks and offers many ways to enjoy each of them. Whales feed and otters bob in the glacier-filled Kenai Fjords National Park. Denali National Park is home to North America’s tallest peak and amazing wildlife. Take off for bear viewing, hiking or fishing in Lake Clark National Park and Katmai National Park. Mighty Wrangell-Saint Elias has glaciers larger than Rhode Island, and a gold history runs deep.

In all, Alaska has eight national parks, each among the largest in the nation. With so much to explore, Anchorage serves as a key hub for Alaska’s parks. Learn more about what Anchorage offers for conventions and meetings.

ASAE’s 40th Springtime Expo

As everyone in the Association world must know by now, last week’s Springtime was both the 40th anniversary of the iconic event and also its “Swan Song.”

Your intrepid Blogger was there along with ConventionPlanit.com staff members Katherine & David Markham, Mara Hill-Buckner and Taffy Rice to bid farewell to this event, long characterized by its partnering of education and networking for the Washington D.C. region’s planners and suppliers.

It will be replaced next year by a new endeavor called XDP. The Xperience Design Project will be held May 23-24, 2017, at Gaylord National® Resort & Convention Center at National Harbor, Maryland.

Needless to say, this announcement leant a certain amount of poignancy to the occasion but in no way diminished the energy level of business being done on the tradeshow floor. While this format appears to be going the way of the Dodo bird, we are ever hopeful that the replacement Business Exchange component of the new event will continue to serve the B to B and Face-to-Face needs of both planners and suppliers.

Among the member partners of ConventionPlanit.com exhibiting in the hall were Hargrove, Visit Bellevue, Team San Jose, Delta Air Lines, Little Rock CVB, Visit Anchorage, Providence Warwick CVB, Hyatt Regency Chicago and Mohegan Sun Pocono Downs.

While our booth looked great, we were no match for the special Alaskan visitors that decorated the Visit Anchorage booth. (Our friends told us they brought over 200 huskies to the show, and all of them found new homes!)

PCMA’s Convening Leaders Starts January Off Strong

pcma convening leaders

Neither snow falling from above, slush building underfoot or wind catching one in the mid-section prevented over 4,000 participants from gathering  Jan. 11-14 for the 2015 PCMA Convening Leaders meeting in its hometown of Chicago. Your intrepid ConventionPlanit.com Blogger (no stranger to this type of weather) was one of the attendees’ intent on beginning the New Year by joining colleagues for 3 days of education and networking.

PCMA kicked off on Sunday with the Opening Reception held at the prestigious Museum of Science and Industry which was transformed to display Chicago neighborhoods. Food stations showcased yummy tidbits from around the globe while entertainers mingled with the attendees (I nearly became a participant in a Tango demonstration moving around the floor!)

I caught up with CP.com suppliers Julie Dodds from Visit Anchorage, Gerry Kingston from Delta Air Lines and Jane Schuldt with World Marketing Group as well as Advisory Council member David Williams from IEEE attending with his family. His daughter is looking to join the hospitality industry upon graduation…what an intro to our world!

IMEX America Wrap Up

I found a few more photos floating around on my devices that I wanted to share with you all. The third and final day of the show, I had a chance to check out some of CP’s partners amazing booths.

Associated Luxury Hotels International had a very large space at the show, and with 160+ member hotels, it was easy to see why the extra space was needed!

Maureen attended the IMEX America Closing Press Conference, which this year expanded to include the three representatives pictured with their partner, Ray Bloom. Obviously the 4th edition of IMEX America surpassed all records previously established.

  • 2900 hosted buyers (8% increase)

Maureen also had a chance to explore some of the other stands, and wouldn’t you know, she decided to take a nap! The Delta Air Lines stand brought all the comforts of flight to Las Vegas with this plush bedding and seat.

Anchorage Visits Washington, DC

Yesterday, ConventionPlanit.com Co-Founder Katherine Markham, CHME attended a luncheon sponsored by Visit Anchorage in Washington, DC.

Our friends at Anchorage, always the most gracious of hosts, put on a wonderful presentation showcasing all of the exciting activities available to meeting planners who are lucky enough to hold a meeting there.

ASAE Annual Highlights

The ASAE Annual this year was a whirlwind and we’re still trying to recover!

The expo opened in Atlanta over the weekend with a combination of great experiences unique to this site of “Southern Hospitality.” 1000000004

At the World of Coca-Cola,you could sample from a choice of 60 beverages (and you thought they only sold regular or diet) while learning about the history of the secret formula and examples of the drink’s impact on global cultures.

Next, a walk through the Georgia Aquarium got you up close and personal with whale sharks, manta rays, dolphins and many other species of fish that frolic in the aquarium’s 8.5 million gallons of water.

With all this “liquid” stimuli, it was a welcome sight to attendees to come across the delicious food and drink catered by Wolfgang Puck throughout the green space of Pemberton Park. And the Go-Go’s (you remember them!) rocked out on the stage just in case you needed additional entertainment. All in all, it was a terrific beginning to the 3 day event!!

The next day, The Association Solutions Marketplace opened with roughly 400 exhibiting companies with more than 600 booths…among  them many CP.com supplier members. With the show running 2 days for 3 ½ hours each, exhibitors had the opportunity to reconnect with existing clients as well as meet new clients.

Dan O’Neil, V.P. Strategy & Sales and Julie Giorgio, National Account Manager, Bloomington CVB

In fact, the expo hall was a great place to just reconnect with the industry in general…as well as enjoy a “picnic” lunch environment.

ConventionPlanit.com supplier partners even won Best In Tradeshow awards!

Fifty first-time attendees hit the tradeshow floor to help determine who was best in show for the ASAE 2013 Annual Exposition. Travel Portland won 1st Place for Island Booths (no, not those kinds of islands) and Visit Anchorage took 1st Place for Inline Booths. Jim Henderson and Julie Dodds were so excited that this was the second year in a row that they were awarded this prize!

Congratulations to Portland and Anchorage – all time winners in our book!!!

Springtime Grand Booth Prize

At last month’s Springtime Expo, ConventionPlanit.com also co-sponsored a Grand Prize with longtime ConventionPlanit.com member Visit Anchorage. The prize, a Big Alaskan Adventure, was promoted at both booths.

The prize package included roundtrip airline tickets for two from Alaska Airlines, a two night stay in downtown Anchorage at the Hilton Anchorage, a ride on the Alaska Railroad, a Wildlife Glacier Cruise, a two night stay at the Grande Denali Lodge, a two day car rental, passes to the Anchorage Museum, the Alaska Native Heritage Center, the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center, and more!

The adorable brown bear gift bags were displayed at both booths and were gifted to two runner’s up.

Visit Anchorage’s booth display really tied in with the theme. The dog treats to the right of the bears are made of real Alaskan salmon and were a big hit with my pups!

We were eagerly awaiting the announcement of the winner – and our moment in the spotlight on the tv screen in the expo hall.

The winner of the grand prize package was Stephanie Santini with The Sulphur Institute. Stephanie was thrilled! Here she is with me, Julie Dodds of Visit Anchorage, and Maureen Pickell.

Save the date for next year’s Springtime Expo, which will take place on May 15, 2014!
