When you need to get away from it all, Beaver Hollow Conference Center in Java Center in upstate New York is the place to go. It’s an extremely private in-the-woods getaway for top leadership conferences, and includes lots of outdoorsy teambuilding opportunities in addition to the usual meeting amenities.
I took my 14-year-old son there last week. He thought it was a “cool place” and proceeded to catch three fish on the expansive lake right behind the main lodge. He also volunteered to try out the 200-yard zip line that takes you from the top of a rock-climbing tower down to the forest floor in a speedy adrenaline-generating trip.
Besides the state-of-the-art meeting rooms and small auditorium, the place is full of beautiful informal outdoor meeting places where you can sit beside a pond full of Koy, relax by the pool and hot tub, or even meet in a boat in the middle of the lake. It also has many recreational options ranging from bocce ball to tennis.
Basically, Beaver Hollow is a summer camp for adults! It’s small – 91 rooms with 155 beds – so you get personal attention and a learning experience with few distractions. It’s also extremely “green,” with a focus on minimizing waste and reducing its carbon footprint. Future green initiatives under consideration include an electric generator to be powered by lake overflow and an experimental organic farm.
Check it out at http://www.beaverhollow.com. If you call, ask for Kathy Egan. She’s the best.

With regard to service “above and beyond”, this example is at the top of my list. I was attending an evening event at one of the D.C. Marriott hotels and the doorman got me a taxi from the stand at the hotel. I arrived where I had parked my car, the cab left and I then discovered that my keys had fallen out of my purse and were still in the taxi. My roomate was out of town and I couldn’t get into my car or the house. I called back to the hotel and they connected me with the doorman. He remembered the cab driver and gave me the number of the cab company. I called them to report the loss but meanwhile that taxi had returned to the hotel and the doorman retrieved my keys and had them waiting for me when I returned. This happened quite some time ago but I’ll never forget that this employee went to such lengths to help someone who wasn’t even a guest at the hotel.
